Eight Precious San Pao Tai is also called Ba Bao Cha. Ba Bao Cha means "eight precious tea". San Pao Tai means "three brewing ware". The ware is called Gaiwan, a traditional Chinese three-piece(san meaning three) tea ware consist of a lid, a cup and a tea tray.
The eight precious recipe varies but generally contains white chrysanthemum, logan, Chinese date, goji berry, raison, preserved fruits, green tea leaf and rock sugar. Some recipes contain licorice and sesame seeds, walnuts, apricots, apple slice, orange peel, white fungus, rose hips, lily buds, various Chinese herbs, etc.
As a famous local tea from Lanzhou, Gansu, 8 Precious San Pao Tai is a Chinese muslim cuisine adaptation to Chinese tea culture. When tea is introduced to northwestern China, a region with rich Chinese muslim traditions, the local muslim added regional fruits and flowers to the tea and created the unique Chinese muslim tea culture.
